The VBRS Technology Radar organizes emerging technologies into four rings: Adopt (proven value, recommend for enterprise use), Trial (promising, explore with deliberate pilots), Assess (worth watching, not yet enterprise-ready), and Hold (proceed with caution or wait for maturity).
Adopt — Enterprise-Ready Technologies
Vector Databases — The emergence of vector databases (Pinecone, Weaviate, pgvector) as the retrieval layer for enterprise AI applications has moved from novelty to necessity. Every organization building RAG-based AI applications needs a vector database strategy.
FinOps Platforms — Cloud cost management has matured from spreadsheet exercises to dedicated platforms that provide the granularity and automation needed at enterprise scale. With cloud spend representing 15-20% of IT budgets, FinOps platform investment is justified for any organization spending over $2M/year on cloud.
Infrastructure from Code — The next evolution of Infrastructure as Code — platforms that generate infrastructure configurations from natural language or application-level intent — is ready for enterprise adoption.
Trial — Promising Technologies
Agentic AI Frameworks — Multi-agent AI systems (LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen) are delivering real value in specific use cases — software development automation, research synthesis, customer service orchestration. They are not yet reliable enough for unsupervised production deployment, but structured pilots are producing compelling results.
Confidential Computing — Hardware-enforced secure enclaves enable computation on encrypted data without decrypting it. For regulated industries processing sensitive data, this is a promising privacy-preserving computing primitive.
Hold — Wait for Maturity
Quantum Computing for Business Applications — Despite enormous hype and significant investment, fault-tolerant quantum computers remain years away from enterprise deployment. Quantum-resistant cryptography is adoption-ready; quantum business applications are not.
Autonomous AI Agents in Production — Fully autonomous AI agents operating without human-in-the-loop oversight are not ready for production deployment in regulated industries or high-stakes business processes.
